Weekend Masterclass: Portrait Painting

Take inspiration from the mesmerising depiction of Eleonora of Toledo (1522 - 1562) in our new display, Cosimo I de’ Medici: Art and Dynasty, and create your own 16th-century style portrait with the help of practising artist Laura Smith.
Working from our permanent collection and a professional art model, you’ll learn how to make energised, colourful portraits of your own, using a combination of mark-making materials and acrylic paints.
Recently conserved to reveal its original vibrant palette, the Eleonora portrait, alongside others from across the collection, will provide a springboard for making personal, free and vivid interpretations of the model in this two-day course.
Open to all levels of experience. All materials will be provided.
About the tutor: Laura Smith is a London-based painter, specialising in still life and portraiture. A member of the New English Art Club, she studied at The Slade School of Fine Art and The Royal Drawing School and shows widely in London and across the UK.
Joining Information and Format: For ages 18+. This masterclass will take place in the Learning Studio, Lower Ground Floor.
