Saturday Workshop: Wax Sculpture
| Date | Saturday 30 January 2027 |
| Time | 10.30-16.30 GMT |
| Location | At the museum (Learning Studio) |
| Tutor | Sarah Tombs |
Take an in-depth look at the intricate porcelain masterpieces featured in our new display, Metamorphoses: Porcelain Sculpture by Rachel Kneebone, and create your own abstract works of art in wax, with the help of sculptor Sarah Tombs.
Beginning in the galleries, we’ll spend time looking closely at Kneebone’s work and sketching from select pieces in the display. Together we'll explore the recurring themes, forms and details in Kneebone's work, gathering inspiration for your own sculptural response.
Returning to the studio, we’ll use fine modelling wax to develop drawings into small sculptures. You’ll learn key modelling and construction techniques and experiment with different ways to suspend your work or mount it on a decorative base.
Open to all levels of experience. All materials will be provided.
About the tutor: Sarah Tombs is a sculptor and lecturer in art history. She trained at Wimbledon and Chelsea Schools of Art and at the Royal College of Art and has been making sculpture for over 30 years, working in a range of traditional techniques and materials including steel fabrication, bronze, plaster and wax. Having made eleven major public sculptures in the UK, her work can be found in both public and private collections including the Government Art Collection.
Joining Information and Format: For ages 18+. This workshop will take place in the Learning Studio, Lower Ground Floor.
